What can my generator run? / 3,500 W

What can a 3,500 W generator run?

The 3,000–3,500 W class is the most common first home backup generator: enough for the fridge, a sump pump and a furnace fan, but not much more at the same time. On its own it can start 64 of the 86 appliances we track. Big ones it can’t: well pump 1 HP, electric range, dishwasher, central air conditioner 2 ton, central air conditioner 3 ton.

Common appliances, one at a time

Assumes 3,500 W is the generator’s starting (peak) rating and about 2,800 W is its running rating. Across the 11 generators we track, running watts are typically 80% of starting watts. Enter your generator’s real numbers in the planner below.
